Kyle _____ Kyle Adams | Java Developer | Gordon Food Service | 616-717-6162 >>> AJ Penninga 7/28/2006 11:42 AM >>> Hey gang. I can volunteer to bring my mac mini (iMovie) to capture the sessions. I've got an external HD also. I'll need a monitor for it, but that should be easy to come by. And since I'm staff at calvin, I might be able to get some pull to try to get a DV camera from the AV department. I'll check next week when I'm on campus. -- AJ Penninga [ http://ajp.net ] _______________________________________________ Barcamp-organizers mailing list Barcamp-organizers@gr-jug.org http://gr-jug.org/mailman/listinfo/barcamp-organizers From jeff at demaagd.com Tue Aug 1 13:54:23 2006 From: jeff at demaagd.com (Jeff DeMaagd) Date: Tue Aug 1 12:19:55 2006 Subject: [Barcamp-organizers] Video Casts In-Reply-To: <44CF4800.6F65.0052.0@gfs.com> References: <8D12BDCD-8B83-4F9D-9261-7DFEAFC55C89@penninga.net> <44CF4800.6F65.0052.0@gfs.com> Message-ID: <44CF873F.4080600@demaagd.com> Kyle Adams wrote: > Having cast my lot against an "official" BarCamp vidcast... > > I will be bringing my DV camera and tripod and videotaping all the > sessions I go to or present. For what it's worth, I'm willing to do the post, provided that no one expects it to be fancy and that I can do it in my off-time in the following week(s). I don't think it needs fancy post-work anyways. Importing, adding a title card, adding short credits and encoding doesn't take much manual intervention time, it is mostly computer-time. There are a number of topics we'd like to cover in the inaugural e-mail, so I'm going to jump right in... WHAT TO EXPECT Good question, and one that depends in large part on you, the campers, as you'll see below. With that said, what follows is loosely based on http://barcamp.org/what%20to%20expect : BEFORE BAR CAMP Register via the wiki. There's a big green "Go Register!" button on the BarCampGrandRapids page ( http://barcamp.org/BarCampGrandRapids ); guess what it's used for? Pre-registering is required and is a big help in understanding how much food we need to plan for, etc. Will we let you in at the door if you haven't pre-registered? Nope. So go register. No really. We won't let you in. Go register. We kept the form extra simple, so you should be able to do it in under 2 minutes. Well, maybe if you slip us a $20, we'll let you in. Registering is cheaper. The other pre-BarCamp thing to do is publicize, publicize, publicize! All of our publicity is via word-of-mouth and other grassroots efforts. If you have friends or co-workers who would be interested, let them know. There are some marketing materials available at http://barcamp.org/BarCampGrandRapidsMarketing to assist in spreading the word. WHAT TO BRING * A laptop - It's great for showing off that program you mentioned in your session. Plus, there are many hotspots provided, and plenty of downtime to browse around and look into everything you've learned. * A session to lead - come with an idea for a session you can lead. You don't have to be an expert at your topic; as long as it's not too specific, there'll probably be someone else present who can help you out. You can also contribute to the conversation during a session. This is a great way to participate, since it spreads knowledge from everyone, instead of just the leader. If you're not comfortable with public speaking, think about pairing up with someone else or presenting a shorter session (e.g. a five minute lightning talk). There's a great deal of leeway for creativity here; the primary key is actively contributing back to the conference. The more participation in all aspects, the better the BarCamp. Here are some presentation resources: - S5, http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/s5/ - a standards-based (read: HTML/CSS/Javascript) slide show system. Makes posting your presentation to the web very, very easy :-) - Presentation Zen, http://presentationzen.blogs.com/ - an excellent blog on creating compelling presentations. Be sure to check out the "Popular Posts" section in the right-hand navbar for the best reading. - Ditch the slides. Go code all the way. Especially good if you've got a demo of some sort. * Camping overnight? Bring a sleeping bag, pillow, overnight supplies, and a tent - yeah, a tent. It's a camp, right? Feel free to have fun and be creative with your shelter of choice. * Optional stuff: WiFi access points, power strips, networking cables, anything that reeks of general geekery. WHAT NOT TO BRING * Alcohol - our venue (generously donated) is a dry campus. Going off-campus for refreshments is no problem (and even encouraged), but while on-campus we ask that you'd kindly limit your programming fuel to the non-alcoholic sort. Campus safety will escort anyone with alcohol off campus and may decide to shut down the event, which would really suck. THE EVENT Come early, but not too early - Showing up between 5:30 and 6 is fine. Show up much earlier, and you'll get drafted for setup work (much appreciated!). Show up later, and you'll miss some social activity and maybe even dinner (which starts at 7). When you arrive, go to the check-in table, where you can claim your nametag. Follow your nose to the food room, where you'll find (surprise!) food and lots of people to socialize with. Or not, if you're the introverted type; I mean, we are talking geeks here, right? In which case you may find one of the classrooms we've reserved for general use a good place to settle down with your laptop. If you brought wireless equipment or power strips, find Dave Brondsema and ask where they're most needed. Please set your wireless router to a unique SSID (e.g.- barcamp_xxx), to avoid networking conflicts (nasty with a dozen routers in the same room named the same thing). Also, if you can, please lower the radio output of your router. There'll be plenty of WiFi cloud to go around without everyone blasting out at full power. If you're just looking to help in general, find Kyle Adams and he'll let you know where help is needed most. Dinner will run from 6-7 PM, after which we'll all gather for the introduction session. There will be some announcements, and then people who intend to lead a session will be invited to add the session to the conference schedule wall. If you've never seen a BarCamp conference schedule wall before, take a look at these photos: http://www.flickr.com/photos/whurleyvision/164619255/ (Houston) http://www.flickr.com/photos/whurleyvision/111954003/ (Austin) http://www.flickr.com/photos/mattapictures/176809392/ (San Francisco) http://www.flickr.com/photos/luke0x/89326444/ (NYC) Basically the wall will divided up into time slots and available rooms; session leaders will add their session to whatever slot they want to present in. At the same time be looking the wall over to see if there are any sessions If you see a session you're interested in, please put a mark on the paper to indicate it, in case room switches need to be made due to popularity. The schedule for the rest of the evening, as well as the following day, is currently posted at http://barcamp.org/BarCampGrandRapidsSchedule . While we're leaving as much time as possible for sessions, we'll also have rooms setup for general work and/or socializing. Then there's the ever-popular hallway track. Feel free to socialize, work on projects, show off your latest techno-triumph and just generally geek out. After the sessions are finished, please stick around to clean up. It's generally as simple as throwing trash away and taking down signs, but all the help is appreciated. As Tim O'Reilly would say, it's all about an architecture of participation. Here's what I'm thinking for food: Friday dinner - Italian night (pizzas, lasagna, breadsticks, salad) Saturday breakfast - continental breakfast (donuts, muffins, fresh fruit, bagels, OJ, milk) Saturday lunch - catered subs (party subs from Subway or platter from Quiznos) Snacks - chips, salsa, pretzels, candy bars, + some healthy options (if I can find 'em in bulk) Beverages - Mountain Dew, Coke, Pepsi, Diet Coke, Sprite, maybe some Red Bull if we can afford it Thoughts? The above were chosen for general appeal and ease of preparation. I'm planning on being at Calvin's campus at 4:30-ish. I'm going to stop by one of the office supply places on 28th to pick up: * Materials for session wall (more in another e-mail) * Name tags * A ream of 11x17 paper (signs) * Several posterboards (signs) * A bunch of Sharpies Is there anything else I should bring? We need to send out a second e-mail on Monday to the barcamp@gr-jug.org mailing list. I'm working on that one. Dan, any update on the social get-together? If this does come together, any thoughts on what we could do for Envoi Solutions? My primary idea was to have a Sponsors Wall next to the Session Wall, listing the Sponsors and thanking them. Right now that would be: * Calvin * GFS * Envoi? Unfortunately 94West (the guys behind BuoyBuilder, the Java GUI tool) had to pull out; too many other things going on that weekend. Until then... PRESENTATIONS Have you thought about how you're going to contribute to BarCamp? If you're the organized type, take the final week to put the finishing touches on your slides, get the demos working smoothly, etc. As for me, I'm planning on doing that at 3 AM Saturday morning :-) We've had more ideas added at http://barcamp.org/BarCampGrandRapids so you can take a look if you need inspiration. A tip: pick something you're passionate about. It'll make talking about it much easier. Don't feel constrained to the technical world, though it would be nice if you could tie it back to something geeky. DIRECTIONS Calvin College is located on the southeast side of Grand Rapids. Google Maps is your friend: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=3201+Burton+Street+SE,+grand+rapids,+mi Once you get on campus, head for the Science Building (SB): http://www.calvin.edu/map/ You can park behind the Engineering Design and Project Center. We'll try to have signs out there so you can find your way in. We'll be on the third (top) floor, but I'm hoping to have a registration area setup right by the back entrance (the one closest to the parking lots). Here are the rooms we have reserved for BarCamp: SB 301, 302, 303, 334, 336, 343, and 382. One other note: the MCAT (med school admissions) will be going on in another part of the building ( http://www.calvin.edu/mcat/ ), so use common sense and courtesy. Standardized tests are grueling enough as is. FOOD If you have an special dietary needs, please let me know ASAP as we're making the food arrangements right now. REMINDERS Don't forget: * laptop * presentation * pillow (for the overnighters) LAST WORDS We have about twenty people registered, twenty three on this list. We'll see you there. I can offer to do a presentation or participate in a panel discussion on e-commerce. I would have said something earlier but I was holding out for one potential presentation, I was hoping to have a piece of light industrial equipment* but now it's obvious that it won't be here in time. I can still do a presentation on it, it's just not the same without being able to design & make things on the spot. This is BarCamp after all :-) In looking at photos of session walls from other BarCamps, it's quite clear that people have improvised when there weren't enough slots available when they wanted to present, etc. In our case, we'll have 3x13 = 39 slots, which seems like plenty considering we'll probably have 20-25 attendees. We also have seven rooms reserved, so there should be an extra room or two for overflow sessions. Ooo... I like that VeraLaser. Directing people in... the way you described (through DeVries) sounded like it would require walking roundabout the building from the parking lots. I was thinking of having them come in via the straight shot from the parking lot into the back door/stairwell. Let me know where to meet you guys and I'll be there. - Dan -- Dan Diephouse Envoi Solutions http://envoisolutions.com http://netzooid.com/blog From dave at brondsema.net Fri Aug 18 19:02:40 2006 From: dave at brondsema.net (Dave Brondsema) Date: Fri Aug 18 13:27:40 2006 Subject: [Barcamp-organizers] Help Wanted In-Reply-To: <44E5FB30.5070805@envoisolutions.com> References: <44E1AB59020000520000D17D@mail2.gfs.com> <44E1BEEC020000520000D1DC@mail2.gfs.com> <44E1E9A0020000520000D27D@mail2.gfs.com> <44E1E9A0.6F65.0052.0@gfs.com> <44E33D44.6030806@envoisolutions.com> <44E5B305.7070403@brondsema.net> <44E582B6.6F65.0052.0@gfs.com> <44E5FB30.5070805@envoisolutions.com> Message-ID: <44E600C0.5030601@brondsema.net> We've had some off-list communication, let me fill you in. Kyle and I are going to meet at GFS Marketplace around 4 to pick up the stuff. Then we'll meet Joel Adams at 4:30 in the SB atrium (the glassy entryway between the old SB and the new DeVries Hall, facing the College Center). You can meet up with us there. Message-ID: <44EEB590.6F65.0052.0@gfs.com> Now that we've all had a week to recover :-) Where to next? I'd like to do another BarCamp next year. Here are some ideas for improvement: * Double the attendance so we can have two simultaneous tracks * Add another 2-3 sponsors (I'd love to have some kind of official clothing next year) * Add another 1-2 organizers * Have some of the organizers attend BarCamp Chicago (or anywhere really) for additional ideas * More diversity in profession (I'm primarily thinking digital designers/artists, but I'd be open to other communities) * Better traditional marketing I learned that Matrix-like mystery marketing is great for generating buzz, but not so great for translating that buzz into registrations. I think a round of mystery marketing followed up by a round of info-rich marketing might prove more effective. Thoughts? It will take some effort to do more good marketing. But it could be worth it. Not that it needs to be discussed now, but so I don't forget it: I think our basic schedule worked well. Friday night was a good opportunity for folks to "try it out" and see what was going on without committing to a whole day. I noticed a several people did that. Breakfast needed to get rolling faster though, and probably someone should've cut off sessions that were going too long. -- Dave Brondsema Software Developer Cornerstone University -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
