From Kyle.Adams at gfs.com Mon Aug 6 10:48:55 2007 From: Kyle.Adams at gfs.com (Kyle Adams) Date: Mon Aug 6 10:47:16 2007 Subject: [Barcamp] Blueprint CSS Message-ID: <46B6FC95.6F65.0052.0@gfs.com> Hey, just wanted to point out an excellent resource that just hit my radar this weekend: http://code.google.com/p/blueprintcss/ This CSS (and associated resources) does pretty much everything Calvin and I talked about in the YUI grids/design presentations. Basically having a well-designed web site just got even easier: * Resets and baselines browser default CSS to provide a more consistent appearance across browsers * Baselines layout to a 18px line height * Defines sensible typography (e.g., defining a custom font for ampersands as covered in the "Web Typography Sucks" presentation) * Provides an alternative to YUI Grid for grid-based layouts * Provides an intelligent default layout, 960px with 14 50px units (Hint: if you use 2 units for a sidebar or nav column, you end up with the magical number 12 units left over; anytime your total units is divisible by 3 or 4, you've got a nice setup for 3 and/or 4 column layouts) * Even includes a print stylesheet Blueprint CSS is a competitor with YUI's reset-fonts-grid.css and base.css; while I'd like to see the two projects merge, there is some benefit from having the competition between the two. Blueprint CSS brings some compelling new features to the table, giving it a technical edge on YUI CSS, but YUI has a tremendous community behind it. It'll be interesting to see what the future holds for both projects. At the very least, Blueprint CSS can help serve as a "best practices" example no matter which approach (YUI, Blueprint, or home-grown) you end up taking. Kyle PS - Blueprint's original web site, at http://bjorkoy.com/blueprint/index.html , is also a good example of what Blueprint brings to the table. Notice the vertical rhythm as marked out by the lined background. Hit tip to AJ Penninga for pointing this out to me...
