If there is another group in the area, feel free to share the information on this list. We might find a partnership or something worthwhile. There was one down in Kalamazoo a while back, but that didn't suit most of our users. Since Steve stepped down I guess a couple balls were dropped. Ken Radlick has stepped up to the plate to become the next JUG-president and take on the responsibility of keeping things on track and providing value. Ken has long been an avid supporter and leader of out group, as many of you can attest to. Ken's eagerness to work hard for the JUG has been apparent over the past year. I have great confidence that Ken will do a great job leading us into the "next incantation" of the GR-JUG. Many will note that in the past, the JUG has also been an unofficial venue for Open-Source discussions as well. While Java and OSS have a great deal in common (being a break in the mold, etc...) additional value is brought to the discussion because the group is so evenly split between focus and preference. We have many Windows-lovers and Linux-lovers (and a few BSD guys too!). But keep it coming. Truth is not made up of opinion, but can be viewed through experience and valid discussion. Hope to see you all again soon. Even though I don't come to many meetings anymore I'm still in the background hopefully helping the front-runner leaders like Ken, Carlus, and until recently, Steve. These guys have done a great job in the past, given all that it takes to make a users-group last the several years the GR-JUG has... particularly in the bastion of Microsoft-central. Might be a way to interest a lot of new people Advanced SQL - Assuming everyone is using SQL in their projects as a given how about some advanced stuff? Derby/Cloudscape - Java database that IBM open source that has developed a following in the CF world and on Slashdot as well Java libraries - How about an intro to some of the open source stuff that is currently available. Being a ColdFusion developer I am interested in libraries I might write CF wrappers around. OO Patterns - Most of the advanced ColdFusion developers I know are modeling their development efforts around java patterns. How about an introduction to patterns? I could probably interest some CF'ers into attending a meeting on that topic. Rick Mason From reminders at yahoo-inc.com Thu Feb 10 23:25:50 2005 From: reminders at yahoo-inc.com (Yahoo! (note: these can be presentations or step by step on how to do something like load and use a new plug in or tool or library or ....). 4) How can we make the GR-JUG better? Now let me switch hats to a JUG member and give you my answers to these questions. 1) There are many topics I want to know more about including Hibernate, the Spring framework, JSP are just a few. 2) What I hope to get out of the GR-JUG is to meet people and share knowledge and expand my own knowledge. 3) I like presenting at the JUG it forces me to set aside time to learn something new and explaining it to the group makes sure I understand it. 4) I think the JUG will be better if more people are interested and want to participate. PLEASE, share your thoughts with the group. Also at our next meeting (next Thursday [2/17] at 6:30 at Calvin College I would encourage you to bring information on new Java related things and questions. From experience at other volunteer organizations, it is nice to have program topics picked out three- to fifteen-months in advance. Nice for the presenters, too! As a newbie, I want to see everything: 1a). Presentations and demos. 2b). Weekly if beginning Java on agenda. That would speed the learning process. Else Monthly is fine. 3 all topics) except object-oriented design. I am a C++ guy, but all Java is new to me (except JScript). 4) What other Java topics are you interested in? Beginning Java: where do I start? Demos. Which IDEs, debuggers, class libraries, plug-ins, J2SE vs. J2EE, are good for which environments, or which tasks? Any browser-awareness needed? JSP overview and use. EJB overview and use. Tomcat overview and use. JSF overview and use. JFS overview and use. Accessing flat files or databases: My SQL, Oracle, SQL Server, JDO. Debugging. Available cool apps you can adapt for your site. Staying up to date. 5) No presentations for me for a while, until I find something interesting that others might not know. --Eric Piehl ericpiehl@comcast.net From matt at eisgr.com Fri Feb 18 14:37:16 2005 From: matt at eisgr.com (Matthew Carpenter) Date: Fri Feb 18 14:20:16 2005 Subject: [GR-Jug] GR-JUG survey In-Reply-To: <200502181904.j1IJ4Pc1015993@gr-jug.org> References: <200502181904.j1IJ4Pc1015993@gr-jug.org> Message-ID: <421643EC.6090202@eisgr.com> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Agreed Eric. The only catch to doing 3-15 month advanced warning is actually *getting* the presenters. As a technology-oriented group, we tend to rely on members to fill a lot of the presentations, and bring in vendors less frequently. This puts pressure on the membership to commit. That is not a bad thing. Just please everyone be willing to do what that takes. We *want* to give you 15 months notice :) If you're a newbie, consider doing a presentation on something you intend to learn in the near future. You want intro stuff? We'll give it, but feel free to present on that stuff too. There are others who will benefit greatly from doing so. We've done the same, and that's how it all works. That said, I know Kenneth will do his best to comply with the desire. And the leadership will support however we can. Message-ID: Hi all, I recommend you all visit the XP West Michigan user's group meeting. I attended one for the first time last month and am signed up to attend the next one -- February 22, 2005: "Agile Requirements Gathering". I was quite impressed by several things at the last meeting and about the group: 1. A top notch presenter Robert C. Martin "a nationally recognized author, speaker and agile-programming expert" (words from their meeing notice). He made an excellent presentation on test-first programming using JUnit and on an integration test package called FitNesse. I was able to take what I learned from his test-first programming presentation and make a presentation to my team at IBM by running through a hands on example using JUnit and eclipse while a team mate read through a PowerPoint I threw together. We are going to add test-first programming to our team's best practices list Point being: sitting in on a presentation by an expert presenter, Mr. Martin, went a long way in helping me to understand in a simple and straight forward manner something that up to that point had sounded like pie-in-the-sky. 2. Not exactly sure how many showed up to the XP West Michigan meeting last month, but somewhere between 50 and 100. 3. The group is sponsored by a few companies - which allows them to bring in speakers, etc. 4. The sponsors also provided plenty of snacks for the mid-way break. 5. The peolpe attending the meetings seemed to come from many different perspectives (students, Java developers, C++ developers, testers, managers, sales people, etc...). 6. The XP WM group has a pretty nice web site (seems to be a work in progress) at http://xpwestmichigan.org Any way, check them out. It might spark some ideas for the GRJUG. I think lots of Java developers attend the meetings too. Maybe you could find some recruites from there. :-) John Tobasco ----Original Message Follows---- From: Ken Radlick Reply-To: radlickk@gr-jug.org, Grand Rapids Java Users Group Mailing List To: jug@gr-jug.org Subject: [GR-Jug] PLEASE respond to this GR-JUG survey -- your input is veryimportant! Are you aware of any Java development openings in West Michigan? 2. What companies are currently using Java in the area? 3. We hope, as we do with all of our members, that you will share your thoughts and knowledge with our members. We also hope that one day you might be able to attend our meetings. As for Java related work in GR, I am not personally aware of any current openings. There are a few companies using Java like Gordon Foods and I think there is some work going on at Alticor (the company previously known as Amway), a consulting firm called Atomic Object, I think there are a few others but I can't remember them off the top of my head (hopefully someone else on the list will expand my list). There doesn't seem to be a lot of Java development going on in the GR area which could be why our JUG has been struggling for members and for active participants (but we are trying). Once again welcome to the list and we hope to hear from you often. How can I help you say, well you can post on this e-mail list, attend our meetings, suggest a presentation topic or even offer to present a topic at one of the upcoming meetings. Please see the website (http://gr-jug.org) for details on upcoming meetings (through January 2006). Next month (October 20 @6:30) is show and tell for Java tools. If you have ideas on how to make the JUG better by all means please share them (either to me or the list for discussion). Hope that you will be part of our comeback. Best regards, Ken R. So, if you have something else Java related to show and tell that is more cutting edge by all means plan to come on October 20 (@6:30) and share it with us. Also, while these tools are mainstream there may be new aspects (versions) or tips and tricks that you or others have learned that can make them interesting again. Hope to see you on the 20th. Ken. Host: No Fluff Just Stuff Java Symposium Series (www.nofluffjuststuff.com ) A special invitation for Java and Open Source developers from Rod Johnson, creator of Spring and best-selling author of 'Expert One-on-One J2EE Design and Development' & 'Professional Java Development with the Spring Framework: "Over the last two-and-a-half years, it's been exciting to see the Open Source Java/J2EE Spring Framework community grow from a small, enthusiastic group of talented developers to thousands of users within a wide variety of end user and vendor settings. The Spring Framework community will mark this growing popularity in a special way with our launch of 'The Spring Experience 2005,' the first-ever international event devoted entirely to Spring. The Spring Experience is open to all Java and Open Source developers and will be held December 7-10, at the Sheraton Bal Harbour Beach Resort in Bal Harbour, Florida. (www.thespringexperience.com ) Spring's popularity continues to explode among a great number of users, with: (a) adoption in many large enterprises, (b) a growing list of best-selling publications, (c) endorsement by large commercial Java/J2EE vendors, and (d) overflowing sessions at JavaOne among other events. 'The Spring Experience 2005' will bring together the best-known and most-visionary names in the Spring community to provide attendees more than 40 technically focused sessions across three (3) full days. My company, Interface21, is partnering with NoFluffJustStuff, one of the most-respected names in no-nonsense technical content, to create a high-content, technical event for the Spring Framework community. Unlike many commercial events, 'The Spring Experience 2005' was designed by and for our Spring community of Open Source and Java users. This approach guarantees attendees will get the in-depth content and access to Spring experts they expect. It also provides a unique chance for Spring developers to meet other core Spring develpers, and learn how to make the most of Spring today, and see first-hand where Spring is going in the future." The Spring Experience 2005 will feature four tracks: 1). Web 2). Enterprise 3). Integration 4). Beyond J2EE To discuss these topics, 'The Spring Experience 2005' has secured an unparalleled list of Spring experts, who promise to bring attendees a wide range of in-depth content, tips, Best Practices and code samples.
