Hi all,

I recommend you all visit the XP West Michigan user's group meeting. I
attended one for the first time last month and am signed up to attend the
next one -- February 22, 2005: "Agile Requirements Gathering".

I was quite impressed by several things at the last meeting and about the
group:

1. A top notch presenter Robert C. Martin "a nationally recognized author,
speaker and agile-programming expert" (words from their meeing notice). He
made an excellent presentation on test-first programming using JUnit and on
an integration test package called FitNesse. I was able to take what I
learned from his test-first programming presentation and make a presentation
to my team at IBM by running through a hands on example using JUnit and
eclipse while a team mate read through a PowerPoint I threw together. We
are going to add test-first programming to our team's best practices list
Point being: sitting in on a presentation by an expert presenter, Mr.
Martin, went a long way in helping me to understand in a simple and straight
forward manner something that up to that point had sounded like
pie-in-the-sky.

2. Not exactly sure how many showed up to the XP West Michigan meeting last
month, but somewhere between 50 and 100.

3. The group is sponsored by a few companies - which allows them to bring in
speakers, etc.

4. The sponsors also provided plenty of snacks for the mid-way break.

5. The peolpe attending the meetings seemed to come from many different
perspectives (students, Java developers, C++ developers, testers, managers,
sales people, etc...).

6. The XP WM group has a pretty nice web site (seems to be a work in
progress) at http://xpwestmichigan.org

Any way, check them out. It might spark some ideas for the GRJUG. I think
lots of Java developers attend the meetings too. Maybe you could find some
recruites from there. :-)
